Hello. Today (May 25, 2013) we talked about the importance of Vitamin D 3 to the human body. What a pity that so many people are deficient and aren't aware that they are. It is an inexpensive test to perform, under $40.00. and yet it will make you aware of where you stand.
What are some of the symptoms (these may or may not manifest themselves) that could mean you are deficient in D 3.
The flu - It was discovered that vitamin d deficiency predisposes children to respiratory diseases.
Asthma - Vitamin D may reduce the severity of asthma attacks. Research shows that asthma attacks in school children were significantly lowered in those subjects thaking a daily vitamin d supplement.
Muscle weakness - This is usually caused by a d 3 deficiency because for skeletal muscles to function properly, their vitamin D receptors must be sustained by vitamin d.
Pain - Over the past 10 years, several researchers have found an association between extremely low vitamin D levels and chronic, general pain that doesn’t respond to treatment.
Diabetes - Yet another study conducted with 10,366 children were given 2000 international units of Vitamin d 3 per day during their first day of life. The children were monitored for 31 years, and in all of them, the risk of type 1 diabetes was reduced by 80 percent.
Chronic kidney disease - Patients with advanced chronic kidney diseases (especially those requiring dialysis) are not able to make the active form of vitamin D 3. These patients would benefit from taking D 3 to support calcium metabolism, decrease the risk of renal bone disease, and regulate parathyroid hormone levels.
Periodontal disease - this Chronic gum disease may cause swelling and bleeding gums. Taking increased dosages of D would help produce defensins and cathelicidin. These are compounds that contain microbial properties and lowers the number of bacteria in the mouth.
Cardiovascular disease - Congestive heart failure is associated with vitamin d deficiency. Research finds that women with low vitamin d levels had a 67 per cent increased risk of developing hypertension.
Depression - There is a link between low vitamin d and depression. In a study, it was discovered that maintaining sufficient vitamin d levels among pregnant women and during childhood was necessary to satisfy the vitamin d receptor in the brain integral for brain development and mental function maintenance in later life.
Cancer - Research has discovered a connection between high vitamin d intake and reduced risk of breast cancer. The findings were presented at the American Association for Cancer Research, revealing that increased doses of the sunshine vitamin were linked to a 75 per cent reduction in overall cancer growth and 50 per cent reduction in tumor cases among those already having the disease. Of interest was the capacity of vitamin supplementation to help control the development and growth of brease cancer specially estrogen-sensitive brease cancer.
If you have chronic inflammation in your body you need to act on it now.
How do you know if you have inflammation? You can get a C reactive protein measured. If you have peridontal disease you have inflammation. If you smoke cigarettes you have inflammation. A diet high in sugars or processed foods will contribute to inflammation. If you don't get out of your chair and move it, you will have inflammation. Stress is a major contibutor. And, if you are overweight, you will have a problem.
The good news is that all these factors can be controlled by you. You are in the drivers seat.
One of the frist things you can do is take Dflame by Now Foods. We carry it in our office, or you may purchase it at any good health food store.
If you have periodontal disease, google natural remedies for some ideas on handling that.
If you smoke, please stop. I was once a smoker, and if I can quit, I know you can.
If you eat too many processed foods or if you eat out often, try to cut back on that. Go to Susie's blog under Your Fresh Chef on this web page to get hints and recipes.
If you have trouble finding enough time to exercise, here are some suggestions. When you go out anywhere, park as far from your destination as possible. If you don't think you can handle that, just start small. When you go somewhere, just park one more space away each time.
Anytime you have to wait, either walk in place or walk around. Don't sit or stand in one place. Get moving, and don't give a hoot about what anyone else thinks of you.
Artichoke and Bacon Frittata
7 large eggs
1 cup of heavy cream
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1/4 cup Monterey Jack cheese, grated
3 to 4 slices crisp cooked bacon, crumbled
1 cup artichoke hearts, chopped into chunks
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Grease a 9 inch pie pan. With wire whisk, beat eggs, milk, butter, salt and pepper until well mixed.
Sprinkle artichoke hearts and crumbled bacon on bottom of pan, then top with the monterrey jack cheese. Pour egg mixture over the artichoke and bacon. Sprinkle cheddar cheese evenly over top.
Bake 20-25 minutes or until set and golden brown.
I had to tweak - I added about 1/2 cup chopped red and yellow bell peppers, 1/4 cup sliced green onion, about 1/3 cup cubed up Canadian bacon that I had which needed to be used, and I used a preshredded Trader Joe's Swiss and Gruyere cheese, probably about 2/3 of the 8 oz. bag.
If you are thinking about having labs done to get a better picture
of your overall health, let me suggest that you get the following labs
done. This list is not intended to be taken to the lab and is for
informational purposes only. In addition to the Opti Chem, Dr. B likes to
see most of the tests that are indicated on the bottom of the list. In
the coming weeks we will be covering what most of these tests mean. If
you have questions, please feel free to call us at 800-326-5838.
Migraines. If you've ever suffered from these dibilitating headaches, you'll want to read this.
First, if your migraine is caused by subluxations, then please get yourself to a chiropractor. If you're not sure, a chiropractor will be able to determine if that is the cause by conducting a thorough chiropractic, orthopedic, and neurological examination. Often x-rays will be utilized in achieving the proper diagnosis.
Second, in addition to utilizing chiripractic to help realign the spine, you will want to examine your diet.
The best diet to follow, in my opinion, is the paleo diet. Please visit Dr. Cordain's website, www.thepaleodiet.com
If you find this diet too hard to follow, then let me make some recommendations of foods to avoid.
One of the reasons for avoiding the foods that I will list here is that they contain tyramine. Tyramine is a natural substance formed from the breakdown of protein as food ages. Usually, the longer a high-protein food ages, the greater the tyramine content. You will find the highest levels of tyramine in aged cheeses. Some foods contain bacterial enzymes that convert the amino acid tyrosine in foods to tyramine.
Foods to avoid -
Aged cheeses, American cheese, Gouda, processed cheese, sour cream, and yogurt
Alcoholic beverages would include ales, distilled spirits, draft beer, most wines
Meats and fish - Aged meats such as summer sausages, pepperoni, salamies. fermented fish, pickled meats, potentially spoiled meats
Fruits and vegetables - Avocados, bananas, overripe figs, red plums, spinach, fava beans, green and Italian flat beans, saurkraut, soybean products. tomatoes, yeast extracts to name a few
