Fla. legislators line up behind cut to auto fees

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida legislators are lining up behind a substantial cut to auto fees.

House and senate committees on Thursday advanced bills that would lower auto tag and registration fees by about $25 for many motorists. The fees were raised back in 2009 as legislators grappled with ways to balance the state budget while dealing with the great recession.

The bills that are advancing would cost nearly $400 million. Legislators plan to cut $500 million in taxes and fees this year.

Gov. Rick Scott has made the auto fee rollback a top priority for the legislative session.

Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Coral Springs, questioned the size of the cuts. He said that republicans were pushing them for political reasons because the fees were hiked when Gov. Charlie Crist was in office.
